The Tesla Model Y sold 315,314 units in 2022, which is 2.11 times that of the second-place Mercedes-Benz GLC.
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling premium SUV in China in 2022 and sold twice as many units as the second-place model.
With 315,314 retail sales in China for the full year 2022, the Model Y was No. 1 in China in sales of premium SUVs with a starting price above RMB 300,000 ($44,310), according to a list released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The Tesla SUV sold 2.11 times as many units as the No. 2 Mercedes-Benz GLC with 148,797 units. The Audi Q5 ranked third with 145,778 units and the BMW X3 ranked fourth with 140,991 units.
Notably, the price of the entry-level rear-wheel drive Model Y has been reduced to below RMB 300,000 following Tesla's price cut in China on October 24, 2022.
On January 6, Tesla again lowered the prices of all Model 3 and Model Y versions in China, with the entry-level Model Y's latest starting price of RMB 259,900, down RMB 29,000 from the previous price of RMB 288,900.
But the CPCA still includes the much-watched Tesla SUV model in their list of high-end SUV sales.
Li Auto's now-discontinued Li ONE sold 78,791 units in 2022, placing it at No. 5 on the list.
In December, the Tesla Model Y was also the best-selling premium SUV in China with 29,387 retail sales, according to the CPCA.
The Audi Q5 ranked second with 11,854 units, the Mercedes-Benz GLC was third with 11,232 units and the BMW X3 was fourth with 11,200 units.
Li Auto Li L9 and Li L8 ranked fifth and sixth with 10,582 and 10,189 units in December respectively.
If SUVs in all price segments are included, the BYD Song was the best seller in 2022 with 478,811 units sold.
The Tesla Model Y is second in the 2022 sales ranking for all SUVs, and the Haval H6 is third with 250,120.
In December, the BYD Song also had the highest sales of any SUV with 70,269 units. The Changan CS75 was second with 30,456 units and the Model Y was third with 29,387 units.
In the new energy sedan market, the Tesla Model 3 ranked fifth with 124,456 units sold in 2022, and the Hongguang Mini EV ranked first with 404,823 units.
BYD Qin, BYD Han and BYD Dolphin ranked 2nd-4th with 341,943, 272,418 and 204,226 units respectively.
In December, Hongguang Mini EV was the best-selling new energy sedan in China with 34,523 units sold.
BYD Han, BYD Qin, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal ranked 2-5 with 29,827, 26,206, 26,048 and 15,378 units respectively.
Tesla Model 3 ranked No. 8 on the list of best-selling new energy sedans in December with 12,539 units sold, and Nio ET5 ranked No. 13 with 7,594 units.
