Chinese power battery giant CATL and Japanese mini-vehicle specialist Daihatsu Motor have signed a memorandum of understanding for strategic cooperation.
CATL and Daihatsu will collaborate on battery supply and battery technology to drive Japan's electrification transition, the battery giant said in a press release today.
Daihatsu is a leader in the mini-vehicle segment and one of Japan's oldest automakers, according to the press release.
CATL will provide a stable supply of power cells for Daihatsu's electric vehicle models and advance battery technology, including CTP (cell to pack) and BMS (battery management system), in Daihatsu vehicles, according to the release.
CATL's advanced batteries will help Daihatsu increase EV capacity and performance, providing cost-effective EV products for Japan and emerging markets, the release said.
The partnership is also an important step in CATL's efforts to improve its global footprint and help it explore diverse partnership models in regional markets such as Japan and Southeast Asia, the company said.
CATL is the world's largest power battery maker, with a global power battery installed base of 19.9 GWh in September and a 36.3 percent market share, according to Seoul-based SNE Research.
In China, CATL installed 14.76 GWh of power cells in October, with a 48.33 percent market share, according to data released yesterday by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).
