From January to August, the Model Y is also the best-selling premium SUV in China with 172,418 retail sales.

Tesla Model Y retail sales in China in August were 31,112 units, up 168.76 percent from 11,576 units in the same month last year and up 307.23 percent from 7,640 units in July, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This makes the Model Y the best-selling premium SUVsstarting at more than 300,000 yuan ($43,360) in China in August, according to the CPCA's rankings.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC ranked second with 14,557 retail sales and the Audi Q5 was third with 13,792 units.

From January to August, Tesla Model Y retail sales in China were 172,418 units, up 187.84 percent from 59,900 units in the same period last year.

The model also ranked No. 1 in all premium SUV sales from January to August, according to the CPCA's list.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC ranked second on the list with 101,200 units sold from January to August, while the Audi Q5 ranked third with 99,001 units.

Tesla sold 76,965 China-made vehicles in August, including 42,463 vehicles exported, data released yesterday by the CPCA showed.

That means Tesla delivered 34,502 vehicles in China in August, including 31,112 of the Model Y and 3,390 of the Model 3.

In the list of all SUV sales in August, Song ranked first with 42,477 units; Tesla Model Y ranked second; Honda CR-V ranked third with 23,441 units.

In the January-August all SUV sales list, BYD Song ranked first with 242,834 units; Tesla Model Y ranked second; and Great Wall Motor's Haval H6 ranked third with 166,823 units.
