BYD today unveiled the new SUV Frigate 07, further completing its marine range matrix with a slightly lower positioning than the flagship Tang family SUV of its Dynasty series.

The company unveiled the model at the Chengdu auto show, which opened today, and began pre-sales in a price range of RMB 220,000 ($32,000) - 280,000, with the official launch expected in the fourth quarter.

The Frigate 07 will be available in both DM-i and DM-p power forms, with a range of 100 km and 200 km under battery power.

In BYD's product array, the vehicles have EV, DM-i and DM-p versions, depending on the power form.

The EV represents a pure electric model, while the DM-i and DM-p models are both plug-in hybrid models, except that the former focuses more on fuel economy and the latter on performance.

Depending on the product naming, BYD's products include the Dynasty series as well as the Ocean series, the latter including the series named after marine creatures as well as those named after warships.

On March 17, BYD officially launched the plug-in hybrid model Destroyer 05 in China, the first sedan in its Ocean series and the first model in its warship lineup.

The Frigate 07 will be the second model in BYD's warship series and the flagship of the Ocean series.

The model is a mid-size SUV with a length, width and height of 4,820 mm, 1,920 mm and 1,750 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

For comparison, BYD's Tang lineup measures 4,870 mm in length, 1,950 mm in height and 1,725 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm.

The Frigate 07 is equipped with a 1.5T engine as standard, with the DM-i version featuring a single motor with a peak power of 145 kW.

The Frigate 07 DM-p version is equipped with dual motors, with an additional rear motor of up to 150 kW over the DM-i version, and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in as fast as 4.7 seconds.

Notably, BYD announced yesterday the launch of a new performance version of its flagship SUV Tang family, the Tang DM-p, giving consumers an additional option beyond the pure electric and fuel economy-focused hybrid versions.

BYD offers three versions of the Tang DM-p, all with an electric-only range of 215 kilometers, priced at RMB 289,800, 309,800, and 329,800 after subsidies, respectively.
