Nio today saw the first results of its partnership with Shell, the world's largest gasoline retailer, after the two companies agreed to work together in November last year.

On August 1, the first Nio-Shell battery swap and supercharging station opened in Xiamen, Fujian province in Southeast China, according to a press release.

The station is Nio's 1,048th battery swap station and 1,777th charging station in China, with two 180-kW supercharging piles.

The opening of the station marks the official start of Nio's partnership with Shell in the electric vehicle energy sector, the company said.

Last November 25, Nio announced that it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Shell to work together on charging as well as battery swap facilities in China and Europe.

The two companies will jointly build and operate charging and battery swap facilities worldwide, according to the agreement.

They plan to jointly install 100 battery swap stations in China by 2025 and to operate pilot stations in Europe starting in 2022.

Shell's charging network in Europe will also be available to Nio customers, according to a press release from Nio last year.

This is the latest oil giant to partner with Nio on charging and battery swap facilities.

On April 15 last year, Nio signed a strategic partnership agreement with Chinese oil giant Sinopec and opened their first battery swap station at a Sinopec gas station in Beijing.

Last November 25, Nio put into operation two battery swap stations it built with another Chinese oil giant, CNPC, in Shaanxi province in Northwest China.

To date, Nio has built a total of 1,048 battery swap stations in China, 271 of which are located along highways, data monitored by CnEVPost showed.

The company also has 1,777 charging stations in China, including 10,222 charging piles, and has access to more than 550,000 third-party charging piles.

On July 5, Nio reached the 10 millionth battery swap service milestone, four years after it completed its first battery swap station in Shenzhen on May 20, 2018.
