BYD's (OTCMKTS: BYDDY, HKG: 1211) counter-trend growth was an exception to the general plunge in sales by Chinese automakers.

The company sold 106,042 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in April, up 1 percent from March and up 313 percent from a year ago, according to an announcement on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange today.

This is the second consecutive month that BYD has sold more than 100,000 NEVs, another record high, after selling 104,878 units in March. It stopped production and sales of internal combustion engine vehicles from March.

BYD's performance is in stark contrast to China's major new car makers.

BYD sold 105,475 units of passenger cars in April, as well as 567 units of commercial vehicles.

Among the passenger cars, BYD sold 57,403 pure electric vehicles in April, up 256 percent from 16,114 units in the same month last year.

Its plug-in hybrids sold 48,072 units in April, up 439 percent from 8,920 units in the same month last year.

In January-April, BYD sold 392,371 NEVs, up 388 percent from 80,413 units in the same period last year.

It sold 200,626 pure electric vehicles in the first four months, up 267 percent from 54,713 in the same period last year.

BYD produced 107,478 NEVs in April, up 296 percent from 27,115 units in the same month last year.

The company produced 106,911 passenger cars and 567 commercial vehicles in April. The passenger vehicle production included 57,593 pure electric vehicles and 49,318 plug-in hybrids.

The company's total installed capacity of NEV power batteries and energy storage batteries in April was about 6.242 GWh, up 17 percent from 5.353 GWh in March.

From January to April, BYD's total installed battery capacity was 20.980 GWh.
