From March, Huawei will sell large battery systems for renewable energy storage in Japan, sourcing from battery makers including CATL, earlier reports said.
Chinese tech giant Huawei is also a major player in the energy storage sector.
Huawei has started selling its 2-MWh energy storage system in Japan, according to a report by local media Cailian today.
Sources at Huawei declined to give information on the supplier of the cells used in the system, according to the report, without providing more information.
Last week, Nikkei Asia reported that from March this year, Huawei will sell large battery systems for renewable energy storage in Japan, sourced from battery makers including CATL.
Huawei will combine small battery packs into container-sized units for sale to customers in Japan, with capacities that can be adjusted to meet actual application needs, to meet Japan's demand for electricity during the transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, according to the report.
Energy storage is a highly valued area in the global transition to renewable energy.
Current energy storage solutions are mainly divided into physical energy storage, electrochemical energy storage, electromagnetic energy storage and photothermal energy storage, of which physical energy storage and chemical energy storage installed capacity accounts for the absolute proportion.
Physical energy storage mainly includes pumped storage, and chemical energy storage mainly includes lithium-ion battery energy storage.
Huawei has become a major player in the lithium-ion battery energy storage sector and announced at the end of October last year that it had signed a contract with Shandong-based SEPCO III Electric Power Construction to build a 1,300MWh energy storage project in Saudi Arabia.
The signing took place during the 2021 Global Digital Energy Summit held in Dubai on October 16 last year.
Huawei said the scale of the energy storage project is the largest in the world and has strategic significance and demonstration effect on the development of the global energy storage industry.
Huawei previously said its digital energy division has more than 10 years of experience in energy storage system research and development and more than 8GWh of energy storage system applications, and is committed to cross-border integration of digital information technology with photovoltaic and energy storage technologies.
