As one of the most restrictive cities in China for car purchases, Beijing issues more qualifications for new energy vehicle purchases than fuel vehicles each year. So which brands of electric vehicles do residents who qualify buy?

The following rankings are based on January-June data of these models' sales in Beijing.

The Tesla Model 3 had 1,314 insurance registrations in Beijing in June and 5,304 insurance registrations from January to June, the data shows.

The Model Y ranked second on the list with 1,499 insurance registrations in the city in June and 4,919 from January to June.

BYD Han EV was third at 1,253 units in June and 4,308 units from January to June.

BJEV EU series ranked fourth with 1,783 units in June and 4,295 units in January-June.

The Nio ES6 was fifth with 553 units in June and 1,710 units from January to June.

The GAC Aion V ranked sixth with 493 units in June and 1,637 units from January to June.

The BYD Qin Pro EV ranked seventh with 165 units in June and 1,225 units from January to June.

The P7 ranked eighth with 377 units in June and 1,199 units from January to June.

The BYD Song Pro EV ranked ninth with 268 units in June and 1,197 units from January to June.

The BYD Song Plus EV ranked 10th with 663 units in June and 1,138 units from January to June.

From January to June, China sold 12.89 million vehicles, up 25.6 percent year-over-year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said earlier this week.

New energy vehicle sales from January to June were 1.206 million units, a twofold increase from the same period last year.

This year, China's new energy vehicle production and sales are expected to reach 2 million units, the MIIT said.
