Model 3 sales in China in June were 45.7 percent from cities with restrictions on car purchases, and for the Model Y, that ratio was 52.2 percent, according to a July 15 report from Essence Securities.

The figure comes from the number of cars insured with SALI (Statutory Automobile Liability Insurance) in June, which is mandatory when purchasing a car in China.

The number of Tesla insurance registrations in China in June was 28,508, up 90.4 percent year-over-year. The number of Tesla Model 3 insurance registrations was 16,995 and the number of Model Y was 11,513.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities collectively contributed 88.9% and 95.5% to Model 3 and Model Y insurance registrations, respectively.

The five cities that contributed the most to Model 3 insurance registrations in June were Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hangzhou and Chengdu, with a combined 44.7 percent.

For the Model Y, these cities were Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu, with a combined share of 50.9 percent.

The number of insured registrations for Tesla in China in the second quarter was 63,566, down 6,629 from the first quarter.
