The accumulation of smart driving technology is bringing results to Baidu.

The search engine and autonomous driving giant has won an RMB 98.8 million ($15.3 million) bid for the first phase of a smart transportation pilot project in the Yongchuan District in southwest China's Chongqing.

A unified traffic data platform and command center for the district will be built, covering smart public security traffic management, smart transportation, smart travel services, and autonomous driving, a tender document shows.

The project will upgrade the management system of information security and traffic management, optimize signal control, display the traffic status of the whole district with one screen, and realize traffic dispatching with one button in case of an emergency.

The project will introduce technologies such as vehicle-road coordination, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence, and take one year to develop a business model.

In April this year, China's first self-driving bus operation project was launched in Yongchuan District, and residents can make reservations to experience it through apps such as Apollo Go and Baidu Maps.

The Yongchuan District government partnered with Baidu in 2019 to build a self-driving open test base, which is now the richest in application scenarios and the largest in terms of test vehicles in western China, the company said.

It's the latest move by Baidu to commercialize its technology.

Baidu's self-driving unit Apollo won a bid on June 29 for a self-driving bus project at Longhu in Zhengdong New District in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou for a total of RMB 91.9 million.

The project has a total route length of approximately 16.9 kilometers with 33 stations. The project includes traffic engineering, road engineering and vehicle engineering, according to the winning bid information.
