Chinese electric vehicle company Nio put five new battery swap stations into operation in Shanghai on Tuesday, the most the company has deployed in a single city in China in a single day.

To date, has 28 battery swap stations in the eastern Chinese city, bringing its total in the country to 289. Nio also has 22 superchargers and four destination charging stations in Shanghai, and access to more than 27,000 third-party charging piles.

Nio now has 194 supercharging stations, 373 destination charging stations and access to more than 380,000 third-party charging piles in China.

In the past two weeks, Nio has significantly accelerated the pace of building swap stations, unlike before when a new battery swap station was put into operation every few days.

Nio's goal is to reach 500 of its signature battery swap stations in China this year.

William Li, Nio's founder, chairman and CEO, said in early April that this number was a public target and that "the company's internal goal will be a little more aggressive and higher."

On June 9, Nio's 250th battery swap station went live, completing half of that goal. Since then, Nio has added 39 battery swap stations in 20 days.

CnEVPost's previous calculations showed that Nio would need to build 250 stations in 205 days, or one every 0.8 days on average, from June 9 to meet its goal for the year.

The past 20-day pace showed that the company has been able to put a battery swap station into operation every 0.5 days on average.

If that pace can be maintained, Nio will be able to see its total number of battery swap stations easily exceed 500.
