is recalling some imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles in China, totaling 36,126 units, a statement showed.

This includes 20,428 units of some imported Model S vehicles with production dates between September 18, 2013 and February 20, 2018, and 15,698 units of some imported Model X vehicles with production dates between March 12, 2016 and February 16, 2018, according to a statement published on the website of China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

Some of the vehicles included in this recall are loaded with an eMMC multimedia memory card, which has an industry-standard 3000 programming/erasing cycles. However, over time, depending on actual use, the eMMC hardware can exhaust the life cycle of each memory cell, the announcement showed.

The eMMC controller will not be able to maintain the integrity of the file system when the eMMC memory unit hardware reaches end-of-life wear and tear.

This wear condition may result in a malfunction of the central display software function and may indirectly cause a safety hazard by causing reverse image malfunction, defrost/defog control malfunction, and exterior turn signal failure to illuminate.

Tesla will eliminate the safety hazard by replacing the visual computing module in the center display, upgrading the eMMC multimedia memory card in the recalled vehicles from 8GB to 64GB free of charge, and ensuring that the vehicle has software version 2020.48.12 or later installed.

Tesla announced February 2 that it is recalling all Model S and Model X vehicles with touchscreen issues, totaling 134,951 units, due to pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
